College different than high school?

Change or Not?

As I read the assignment in my Montclair State University web mail account, I realized how college is different than high school …I’d never get an e-mail from a teacher! But as I preceded to think about the assignment and thought about differences and similarities between my high school experiences and my college experiences thus far, I realized that similarities were much more than differences.
During my high school career I was in AP History my Junior and Senior year and also in English A my Sophomore and Junior year. Taking these classes truly prepared me for college. I received a syllabus the first day of these classes and was expected to have read what was needed and do the homework assignment that should have been done for any given day. It is exactly what I have had to do for all of my college class this year so far, including: College Writing: Intellectual Prose, Psychology, Philosophy to Education, Introduction to Computer Science, Introduction to the Visual Arts, and this New Student Seminar class (although I am unable to use Second Life).
I feel as though, especially as a commuter, I am still in high school in a way. I do all the same things I did in high school with few exceptions. Minus all the clicks, drama, and gossip, college is pretty much high school on a bigger campus. My teachers in high school tried to make us all scared about college. The night before my first day of college, I was so nervous remembering all the things my teachers had said about it, but by the end of the first day, I loved college, and realized it was so much different. The one exception that college here at Montclair State is different from my high school experience at Henry P. Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is that I have less classes and more time to myself. I also have more time in between classes which allows me to start or finish assignments, or study, and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Montclair State University.
Although I do feel as though college is no different than high school, I do like college better just because I like the schedule better and the opportunities here to meet new and interesting people from all over New Jersey and also the United States. I look forward to my four years here at Montclair State University and who knows, maybe as I go through my college years my view on this subject will change.
